Visa & Entry Requirements (2026)

Everything you need to know about immigration procedures, digital arrival cards, and tourist taxes before you land in Malaysia.

The Malaysia Digital Arrival Card (MDAC)

Mandatory for all foreign visitors. As of 2024 and continuing through 2026, every international traveler must submit the MDAC online within 3 days before arrival.

  • Who needs it? All foreign passport holders (except Singaporeans, Diplomatic passport holders, and Malaysian PR/Long-Term pass holders).

  • Where to apply: Official MDAC Portal

  • Cost: FREE. Beware of third-party websites charging fees.

  • Procedure: Complete the form online, receive a PDF confirmation with a QR code, and show it to the officer at the airport.

Visa Requirements & Exemptions

Malaysia is very tourist-friendly. Most nationalities (UK, US, EU, Australia, etc.) receive a 90-day Visa-Free social visit pass upon arrival.

  • India & China: Special visa-exemption programs are currently active through 2026 (check latest embassy updates for 30-day stay conditions).

  • Passport Validity: Your passport MUST be valid for at least 6 months from your date of entry.

  • Proof of Onward Travel: You may be asked to show a return flight ticket or proof of sufficient funds (approx. USD 1,000 / RM 4,500) for your stay.

eVISA: If your nationality is not exempt, you must apply for an eVISA at least 2 weeks before travel via the official Malaysia Visa Portal.

Tourist Tax & Customs

These are the two specific costs and declarations you will encounter during your stay and at the airport.

Category Requirement / Fee Who Pays?
Malaysia Tourist Tax (TTx) RM 10.00 per room / per night Foreign Passport Holders only
E-Customs Declaration Mandatory Digital Form All arriving travelers
Currency Declaration Only if carrying > USD 10,000 All arriving travelers

Note:

  • E-Customs Link: In 2026, most airports (KLIA1/2 and Kota Bharu) use a QR code for the Customs Declaration. It’s better to fill this out while waiting for your luggage rather than at the exit gate.

  • Tourist Tax Tip: Remind your readers that if they book through sites like Agoda or Booking.com, the RM10/night tax is often not included in the online price and must be paid in cash/card at the hotel reception during check-in or check-out.
