Essential Island Guide (2026 Edition)

Preparation is the key to a stress-free tropical getaway. Here is everything you need to know about the “logistics of paradise.”

Money & Payments

  • No ATMs: There are still no ATMs on either Perhentian Kecil or Besar.

  • Cash is King: You will need cash for water taxis (RM10–RM50), local meals, and small snorkeling trips.

  • Cards: Premium resorts (like BuBu Resort) and major dive centers accept credit cards, but often add a 3% surcharge.

  • Digital Pay: Some local stalls now accept DuitNow (QR Pay), but this requires a local bank app and a stable signal. Always carry backup cash.

Connectivity & Signal

  • Best Networks: CelcomDigi has the most consistent 4G/5G coverage across Long Beach and the main resort areas of Besar. Maxis (Hotlink) is a close second.

  • Wi-Fi: Most resort Wi-Fi is satellite-based and struggles with heavy use. If you need to work, buy a local SIM card at the airport or Kuala Besut Jetty before boarding.

Electricity & Water

  • Power: Upscale resorts have 24-hour electricity. However, budget chalets often use generators and may turn off power between 10:00 AM and 5:00 PM.

  • Drinking Water: Tap water is not drinkable. To reduce plastic waste, bring a reusable bottle; many resorts provide filtered water refill stations for free or a small fee (RM1–RM2).

Health & Safety

  • Clinic: There is one small government clinic at the Fisherman’s Village (Kecil). For emergencies, a boat transfer to the mainland hospital is required.

  • Jellyfish & Sea Creatures: Be wary of Triggerfish (they can be territorial) and occasional jellyfish. Most stings are minor, but vinegar is usually available at dive shops.

  • Travel Insurance: Ensure your policy covers “Water Sports” and “Emergency Evacuation.”
