Cash is King: There are NO ATMs on the Perhentian Islands. While BuBu Resort and large hotels accept credit cards, you will need cash for water taxis, local cafes, and snorkeling trips. Withdraw enough at Kota Bharu Airport or Kuala Besut Jetty. Plan your journey in our How to Get to Perhentian Islands guide.
Mobile Signal: CelcomDigi and Maxis offer the best coverage on the islands. Check CelcomDigi coverage map before traveling for latest network updates.
Medical: There is a small government clinic in the Fisherman’s Village (Kecil), but for serious issues, you must return to the mainland. Bring your own basic first-aid kit and prescription meds.
Water: Do not drink the tap water. Most resorts provide filtered water stations; bring a reusable bottle to help reduce plastic waste on the island.
Don’t overpack! Remember, you will be getting on and off small speedboats.
Dry Bag (10L – 20L): Essential for keeping your phone and camera dry during boat transfers.
Reef-Safe Sunscreen: As of 2026, Malaysia has tightened regulations on sunscreens containing Oxybenzone. Use mineral-based (Zinc Oxide) sunscreens to protect the coral.
Aqua Shoes: Useful for walking on beaches with dead coral fragments (like Coral Bay).
Power Bank: While BuBu Resort and BuBu Villa has 24-hours power, many smaller chalets use generators that may turn off during the day.
